Student / Programme Doctorate at D-MAVT
Febin Kachirayil has been a PhD candidate in Professor Russell McKenna’s group since November 2020, first at the University of Aberdeen and since February 2022 at the Chair of Energy Systems Analysis at ETH Zürich. His research focuses on flexibility options to integrate renewable generation into decentralized multi-energy systems. Using energy system optimization, Febin investigates the importance of energy storage, transmission, demand-side management options such as load shifting or load shedding, and sector coupling with the transport sector using vehicle-to-grid. He is also interested in methods to increase the robustness of modeling results such as uncertainty assessments and stakeholder engagement approaches.
Febin received his MSc in Energy Management and Sustainability from EPFL in Lausanne with the completion of his Thesis in macro-energy systems modeling at the Climate Policy group at ETH. During his Master Studies, Febin interned at IRENA in Abu Dhabi where he worked on renewable energy auctions. Prior to that, he obtained his BSc in Environmental Engineering from EPFL while spending a year abroad at Chalmers University in Gothenburg.
