Alena Lohrmann joined the Chair of Energy Systems Analysis (ETH Zurich) as a postdoctoral researcher in November 2023. Alena received her BSc and MSc of Engineering and Technology in the field of Thermal power engineering and heat engineering from the National Research University “Moscow Power Engineering Institute” in Moscow, Russia. She moved to Finland in 2016, where she first started to work as a project researcher at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT), Finland. Her work was focused on the transition towards a 100% renewable energy system and sustainability issues related to it.

In her subsequent PhD research, which she also conducted at LUT University, she focused on the analysis of the water footprint of global energy systems and the water-energy nexus. In her work, she explored how the water footprint of the global energy system affects the lifecycle water footprint of other industries (e.g., global cobalt production, mobile data services) as well as its influence on the availability and quality of freshwater resources. Among other studies, she participated in a project on the biophysical limits of the future energy transition, a part of which she carried out during her research exchange at the University of Calgary, Canada.

In her research work, she combines an extensive data analysis of the water footprint of the global energy sector with machine learning algorithms and pursues the LCA approach. She is the first and principal author of an article published in Nature Energy. Please visit her external pageGoogle Scholar page to see her latest publications.
